2022 Head of the Yarra will be restricted to 180 Crews
Peter Wilson - 2021 CHAIR HOTY
7 OCTOBER 2022
DEAR HOTY ENTRANTS AND WAITLISTED,
The 2022 event will be restricted to a maximum of 180 crews, and may be reduced in size or cancelled.
The landing, which has been 7 years in planning, will not be reliably ready for the event.
The contractors have struck rock in trying to insert the eight pilings which secure the 80 m of pontoons, and a redesign is required, with new permits.
It is planned that a 55m temporary landing will be secured. This will only allow 3 eights to be berthed at once, with restricted disembarcation. The current proposal also includes possibly troublesome level changes.
Our estimate is that we will be able to remove a boat every 90 seconds. With 180 boats, and two safety time buffers, the event will run over 5 hours, which is close to our permit time on the river.
We require that the landing is safe and efficient, and we will conduct trials to establish this. It is hoped that we will be able to evaluate this by the end of October, and confirm arrangements.
IT IS POSSIBLE THAT WE WILL NOT FIND A SOLUTION AND THE REGATTA WILL BE CANCELLED
The close of entries (invoice date) has been moved to 7th November 2022.
The sewer works are now firmly scheduled to be finished, and this releases space for out-of-state trailers, and allows some circulation of trailers to pick up boats.
It is possible that events may unfold differently to that expected.
We will communicate with you as soon as any change becomes required.
Peter Wilson
